Time's up John, I can't sit through another start and pretend to tell myself that you'll come around eventually. In eight starts this season with a 2-5 record and an ERA the size of the average person's foot. I'm just frustrated and bent out of shape with the performance from out pitching staff over the past month. Not to mention the added stress from work. However, it isn't even that Smoltz is our only issue. Brad Penny isn't doing much better with a one game difference in wins and losses (7-6) and another starter with an ERA over 5. Then we have Clay Buchholz who's been more depressing than Jon and Kate breaking America's hearts. The sportsfangirl really was saddened to hear that the Gosselin's will not be returning together for the new season.
There are still plenty of games left in the season and I am in no way suggesting to throw in the towel. I don't regret trading Masterson and the load of prospects for Victor Martinez because we needed run support. At the same time, run support does no good when three out of your five starters are giving up a touchdown each game and barely putting in 5 full innings. I've done the math and I'm sick to my stomach. Smoltz, Penny and Buccholz have a combined ERA of 5.70 (109 ER in 172 IP). On the upper half of the rotation, Beckett and Lester have a combined record of 22-11 with an ERA of 3.53.
Continue to hope and pray that Wake and Dice-K will return to the rotation and return to form when they do in order to remove two of the terrible threesome on the end of the line and swing someone to the number five spot until a suitable prospect can replace them. Until then we can hope to pull out half of the series against the dreaded pinstripes and just take it one game at a time.
The Boston Red Sox signed pitcher, Paul Byrd last night. If you remember, Byrd pitched for the Sox last year as well and did much better than Smoltz or Penny have this season. I don't foresee Paul Byrd coming in and solving all of our problems on the mound, but I do see him adding more wins than our current starters 3-5 will.
Thanks to Keith Allison for the picture of John Smoltz.
