Jay Cutler I’d like you to meet the door, don’t let it hit you on the way out. This situation involving Jay Cutler and the Denver Broncos is finally over. The Broncos announced that they've traded their starting quarterback of the past two seasons. There are multiple teams out there in the NFL in need of a starting quarterback, but the Chicago Bears is where he landed.
Da Bears, Jay Cutler's new team
Sources are reporting that Jay Cutler has been traded to the Chicago Bears in exchange for this year's first round pick (18 overall), the first-round pick in 2010, and this years third-round pick (84 overall) and quarterback Kyle Orton. I don't know if Denver wins on this trade. Kyle Orton is an OK quarterback but Jay Cutler has been to the Pro Bowl. Plus, who knows what they get with those picks.
Denver needed to get Cutler out and Chicago has been in need of a quarterback for quite some time. I think Chicago automatically becomes a better team with Jay Cutler as quarterback. He has an extremely strong arm and should fair well in the Windy City. Kyle Orton, however, might find himself in a quarterback battle in Denver with Chris Simms. I'm surprised at how quick Denver made this trade, I thought they might hold out until closer to the draft or on draft day itself. This is just another case of a player feeling he is better than his team and whining until he got sent somewhere he was "wanted".
No More Games
The Broncos are tired of trying to work with him and I don’t blame them. Why should the Broncos keep extending their hand to Cutler only to have him ignore them or walk out of their meetings? Cutler does not want to be a part of the Broncos anymore and they are finally giving him what he wants. Jay Cutler is not going to be a Bronco for much longer and it will be the best scenario for all parties involved. If I was Denver's head coach I would not want his negative, self-centered attitude on my team either.
Ideal Trade Scenario
Earlier today, I wrote out an ideal trade solution. A straight up trade between Denver and Kansas City, Cutler for Cassel. Josh McDaniels would get his quarterback and Cutler would get to play Denver twice a year. It would have been a great ending to this entire drama. Cutler has not helped himself from the start of these trade talks. He’s come off as an arrogant prima donna that got his feelings hurt because his new coach wanted a different quarterback. He could have had productive meetings with McDaniels, moved past this whole thing, and played his butt off to show them that he is a valuable asset to the team. Instead he complained about an aspect of professional football that every player must deal with, it is not a game, it is a business. There are no feelings in football. Except, of course, for the raw emotion of finally winning it all, or coming up short.
I don’t see why any team would want to trade for him. Yes he has the talent, but if he’s going to cry about trade rumors, how is he expected to be a leader in the club house?
But then again, anything is better than Rex Grossman I guess…
I don’t think Jay Cutler is THAT good…he’s good, but is he worth two first rounders plus other picks, it’s debatable.
Eddie is right though, the Bears for sure are better off with Cutler than Grossman or anyone else from their revolving door of a quarterback situation.
No one was saying Cutler was GREAT by any means. He is most definitely an upgrade in Chicago but for sure not worth 3 picks and a player.
He may not put up as big numbers in Chicago that he did in Denver because Shanahan ran a west coast offense with lots of passing, Chicago has been a run oriented team for a long time, which may have been due to the lack of a quarterback. Like I said, we’ll see how this pans out.
I wasn’t implying you said he was great, just that I think the Bears gave up too much. Like you said, the system was a big part of his success.
Football is an emotional game played by emotional people Matt. I’m sure you remember hearing that in Utica a few times. Cutler pulled a T.O., cried about wanting a trade and got what he wanted. This is the New Football League, players decide what goes on in their career, contracts don’t mean anything, and agents are d-bags.
I guess Rex Grossman is no longer “our quarterback” as Lovie liked to say. This is all great anyway becuase Chicago is an NFC team (doesn’t affect the Pats) and an AFC team just gave up a Pro Bowl quarterback for a previously 2nd/3rd stringer who did moderately well in one Monday Night game last season and two “hopefuls” in the draft…….could Mark Sanchez fall to 18? Keep an eye out Matt.
Except Cutler’s emotions/feelings were involved in non-football matters. He got upset at the business side of the game. He whined about it, like Eli refused to play in San Diego, and kind of like how Elway refused to go to Baltimore. There are examples of this type of behavior all over professional sports and I think it’s ridiculous that these guys can walk all over their organizations and refuse to play and then get traded away without any form of in house punishment.
There are a few articles out there showing how crazy ripped off the Pats got with their trade. The Broncos got what the Pats should have gotten. Two First rounders and a second.
Draft day will be interesting to see who falls where.
I agree Matt, Cutler is a “female dog”.
he the best ob
