The Alma Mater took it to Castelton State with a 62-10 win in their second consecutive blowout win of the 2009 season. Utica hasn't started a season 2-0 since the 2005 season when we defeated Becker College followed up by a victory against Husson. The Pioneers finished the 2005 season with a 6-4 overall record and missed a playoff berth by not scoring enough points against Hartwick College in the final game of the season. With the 6-4 record, best posted by Utica College in team history, gives hope to those following the Pioneers in 2009.
A New Running Game
Sophomore running back Zachary Jones from Camden, New York has given the Pioneers ground game their best since the speedy Mike Capra put his toes on the turf. In his two starts this season, Jones has gained 220 yards on 30 carries, averaging 7.2 YPC with 4 touchdowns. With an offensive line that has struggled throughout the teams history, being able to block for a runner that can produce numbers like that can be very motivating. Utica used their rushing game against Castleton this week and scored seven of their touchdowns on the ground.
Having a strong rushing attack has also helped freshman quarterback Andrew Benkwitt have the ability to develop consistency and confidence in the pocket. Benkwitt has a passer efficiency rating of 159.1 completing 27 of 41 attempts for 385 yards with 2 interceptions and 3 touchdowns. For a freshman quarterback to step in and become that effective right out of camp is extremely promising to those of us waiting for Utica College to take that turn in becoming a dominant force in the Empire 8.
Utica College v. RPI
Next Saturday the Pioneers are taking on the same team that ended their winning streak in 2005. RPI defeated Utica 41-10 at '86 Field ending their win streak that season. Look for a great game next weekend as RPI also opened their season with a victory this week against Endicott College 28-0. The two unbeaten's should host one hell of a show, I'll let you know how it goes.
