The Frozen Four
The Boston University Terriers crushed the hopes of Miami of Ohio in a one minute come back miracle. Right from the start the two teams meant business. They came out with some of the fastest paced college hockey you'll ever see. Skaters were tearing around the rink with the look of professional players. Many side conversations at The Sports Depot, which was hosting a BU alumni party for the game, consisted of "no team from Ohio has a chance of beating BU."
No one in Boston thought that there would even be a hockey game that evening, merely just a speed bump for BU on their way to capping a season of perfection. Once the game began, everyone quickly realized that the Miami of Ohio hockey team were not push overs. The Red Hawks were throwing some big hits and were playing with heart. They scored their third goal putting them on top 3-1, with four minutes left in the game. The crowd started to worry. Looks of disbelief were abundant, but the attitude was still "how are Jack Parkers' boys gonna pull this one off?". [Editor's Note: I did not watch the game but my twitter stream was filled with hope from BU fans.]
All We Need is Forty Five Seconds
At the 3:30 mark BU pulled their goalie. Everyone realized that this was a last ditch effort and the nail biting began. The mood changed, the room got quiet and there were lots of pained grunting every time a Terrior touched the puck. At this point the dynamic of the group was mixed with some fans shaking their heads and others saying "all we need is forty five seconds", a reference to a game against arch-rivals Boston College a few weeks earlier, in which BU scored three goals in forty five seconds. With one minute on the clock the Terriors scored, putting the game at 3-2. Everyone was at the edges of their seats, if not standing. The room was a buzzing ball of anxiety and with 17.4 seconds on the clock the unbelieveable happened; BU scored again tying the game at 3-3. Instantly, the Sports Depot went completely nuts. People who didn't know each other were hugging, high fiveing, and screaming. Cans of Narragansett Beer (red and white cans, BU's colors) went flying all around the room.
National Champions
A complete moment of pure ecstasy came over everyone in the Allston bar, and presumably all over the BU kingdom that is Commonwealth Avenue. Once overtime began everyone was just waiting, waiting for the moment when BU would win. There was 8:15 left on the game clock when Colby Cohen ripped a slap shot hitting a Miami defenceman's leg, then bouncing right into the net. The Miami goalie never even saw the puck. Once again the there was an eruption from the croud and the Terriers of Boston University were now officially the best team in college hockey after completing the greatest college comeback on ice.
I watched most of the game tonight when they replayed it and I have to say BU was either extremely outplayed or they severely underestimated Miami of Ohio. Those final 50 seconds were some of the most exciting moments of hockey I’ve seen. It’s incredible to think that they would be able to pull that win out. Great game and should be on ESPN Classic soon. Congrats to Boston University.
It doesn’t compare to the US beating Russia in the 1980 semi-finals, but Al Michales may have even gotten exited at the end of regulation in this one.
It nice to see reactions from people other than those paid. I can not watch as many of the Boston sports any more, so to hear stories from friends and guys that talk about sports like me is nice
I’m glad you enjoy the content Johnny. I know it must stink to not have everything televised in your area, so stop by every now and then and I’ll make sure that we keep you informed on the goingson in Boston.
